I got to play a set with Bernard Purdy last year at a wedding. He was a guest of the groom. My band was playing the music for the show. He sat in on our first set. That guy is still a monster on drums, even in his 80s.
Man, Chuck Rainey is so brilliant. As a bassist, I think the hardest thing to do is play something interesting that doesn't step on the vocal. He walks that line perfectly.
Julia rules
The Purdie Shuffle ! Thanks for digging down into another Steely Dan number !
Julia dropped a video, its going to be an AWESOME day.
Indeed!!
I know, right. What a way to start the weekend
Thank you for you support ❤ // Cheers, Julia
Amazing how such dainty hands can handle a big, beefy bass guitar! Brava maestro!
I never realized how technical that song was, to me anyway. Love Steely Dan and your playing, Julia. Hopefully, this won’t be the last one you cover!
I think the technicality is in the simplicity and the spacing Rainey wrote for this. Not a wasted note.
As his signs says… ‘you done gone hired the hit maker, Bernard ‘pretty’ Purdie’… and with mr Rainey… killer section!!! Excellent video as ever Julia
Always nice to hear some Steely Dan !
Julia could tour with The Dan right now; thanks for the start-the-weekend jam!
Awesome! Chuck will be proud!
well done as always
Formidable ! Quelle précision ! Bravo Julia
Thank you Julia for the analysis and the playthough. I appreciate how you concentrate on the feel, not just on the notes. You can't read groove, you got to feel it.
Excellent video once again. Now forget Steely Dan and focus on some tv themes like Alf, Tatort, Kojak and Starsky & Hutch 😁
Steely Dan were Ridiculous. - Just raw-talent. The entire Aja Album, Songs: Night by Night, Don't take me alive ( among countless others ) - phenomenal group. Great job with this. Enjoyed it. oNe Love from NYC
As always, great playing and great showcase of a great song. And thank you so much for the tab!!
Amazing
i love many steely dan's songs but "home at last" has a special place - i do not mean it is the best but it has a distinctive groove.
Great playing again, Julia. And 10/10 for the bass faces.
could do a whole sub-series on the Dan.
Julia's face while playing demonstrates pure enjoyment, it makes me want to pick up the bass and play now, in the middle of the night, and I don't own one or even know how to play it... 🙂
You playing brought me some joy this morn. I just love the passion you have for music...and bass~ Chuck Rainy sure knew where to put the notes. Looks busy but does not sound busy. I have been playing bass for a couple of months now. I'm a mandolin player and playing bass is making me see music differently. All I hear are bass likes now. I am even dancing a bit more now. But just at home. Groove kids~!
Excellent playing
So great ! My favorite music. Thank you Julia for this beautiful moment.
That is a "make you feel good" bass line, brilliant played by you Julia.
Best feeling
One of the best grooves ever. At the end of the 80s, I dissected the Purdie shuffle down to the millisecond for days with the help of samplers (Akai S1000). Together with Chuck Rainy's bass, it was fascinating to explore all the little deviations from the mathematical metrics in the sequencer.
I love your in groove face. I know that feeling, so well. Thank you for all groovy videos.
I just love your tone.
One of my favorite songs! Thanks for the analysis.....I'll need to study up to follow your monologue....I'm not a music person, LOL.
You’re a genius!
Awesome! Well done!
Dig your profile pic my fellow droog
Just perfect, the analysis, the playing, the tabs ...
It's nice that you highlight also less spectacular tunes, with a great attention to the details=) Thanks for my Friday-Julia dose,
have a nice weekend!
Julia your work is brilliant. Just so you know the guitar work is just as much fun
Double down on the Dan
💯
Thank You, Again Julia. Awesome! Steely Dan is My Fav! You too are my Fav! You Rock!
Classic p-bass tone and perhaps one of the best ones I've heard. You also play it so well!
One of the coolest bass parts and greatest groove of all time (man that piano is SO groovy, as are the guitars, the drums anyway...). Please do Haitian Divorce next!
Wow ! Excellent ! Well done and thank you for sharing ;-)
So amazing!!
All Hail Bro Chuck; killer transcription Sister J! . . learned heaps I thought I knew ha ha Greetings from Oz [-tralia!]
You're so Pro Julia, you were born to play bass.....you nailed this completely, one of my favourite Steely Dan numbers largely because of the feel and pure groove.... brava once again Julia.
beauty
Thank you for sharing this wonderful score analysis!
Excellent analysis of the genius of Bernard Purdie, Chuck Rainey, and the other amazing musicians who played this incredible song!!! Aja is my favorite Steely Dan project!!!
Some of the best recordings of bass
Thank you Julia for this wonderful song, it is my favorite group. Very well interpreted. Your videos are of high quality. As always I will try to play that bass. A video of yours is always a joy.
This is brilliant. One of my favorite songs! I love the way you illustrate the bass part. Thanks so much!
Great playing 👏👏👏👏👏💥 THX Julia
You Rock 😄
Well done! I absolutely love this bass groove!
This is one of my favorite Dan songs, and the bass part is incredible. Thanks for the lesson!

I love it. music from my childhood thanks for breaking it down 🤙🏾
Kickin' bass! I have listened to this song countless times, but I had never paid such close attention to the bass line. Thank you for posting this -- great job!
Love it 💚
mm mmm mmm smoooooooth!
could watch this a thousand times... there is something special about how you drop into the groove... just magical... beautiful... God bless you :)
Absolutely beautiful playing, pure ear candy.
I love how you are so enthralled and deep into the music-you are so one with it, and it shows on your facial expressions.......
I'm in love with Julia's playing... she is so fun and wow it she accurate in her playing.. thank you julia for making this channel superb..
Ha, starting the weekend with Julia on the bass, GREAT! :-) Really groovy song, I like that shuffle, feel very much!
Un saluto a Julia. Grazie per l'ottimo pezzo, complimenti, bravissima.❤
💐🌞
Beautiful. This song exemplifies the genius songwriting and arranging of Fagen and Becker. Great analysis
That was great❤
Thanks Julia, great groove, as always !
A request if possible ?Either Stu Hamm's bassline on Joe Satriani's : Bells of Lal pt. 2, or Toto's : Minefields ?
Bae! Stunning! This Dan tune never really did it for me, but now I'll listen with new appreciation. Is there gas in the car?
Your bass playing is my soul
I enjoyed that, thanks
The Best.....
Cool ty
Always sublime playing Julia! I am still practicing my bass as a newbie. And yes love that you put tabs!!
I feel some reggae in the begin😀
I expected Rainey's line to have maybe more 7ths but its loaded with 6th and 3rds... the guy is just a master at melodic tonally interesting bass
Well done Julia
Great video - - love Steely Dan because of the complexity of the music. Technical question - - do you use software to transcribe the bass line? Thank you.
It never occurred to me until just now but what Chuck is really doing during the chorus is a reggae style rhythm. I forget the name of the style but he's totally doing it when the first beat is a rest every other measure and the emphasis alternates between the two and three. Actually it's during the riff too played between the verse stanzas. Cool. If everyone else changed to reggae rhythms on some remix, the bass is the only thing that wouldn't need to be redone
Julia, you are immensely intensely talented. I wonder if you would consider playing the bass line of Enigmatic Ocean part 3, Jean-Luc Ponty, the basist being Ralphe Armstrong. 💖🎵🎶🎵🎶🎸
Nice “Purdy Shuffle” at the beginning. I just rediscovered TOTO, man check out the bass line on “Animal”
❤❤❤

Dear Julia, would you think of playing B. B. & Q. Band's On The Beat? That is a feel good song that reminds me of going to University. Of course I never went to University except to visit. UBC University in British Columbia Canada is my favorite University in the World. PS You are great.
😍
Hello Julia, You are amazing! Have you ever featured Jaco, Pastorius? with Joni Mitchell: Chinese Cafe / Unchained Melody, Jericho, Coyote
Julia, you play so beautifully...are you playing through an amp, live in the room with a mic, or direct? How did you make this recording....? Your bass sounds wonderful on top of the original recording...how can I do this for myself? thanks for sharing your talent!
Hey, I am going straight into my interface! :-) // Cheers, Julia
All the P's again as usual...💙👊😎
I reckon you'd like Bra by Cymande... Steve Scipio on bass
I see you playing the Sandberg P Bass a lot . Has It become your favourite?
Any chance you could provide PDF of the tab, Julia? Thanks very much!

A Song to Say "Thank You" | Year End Video 2022 | Thomann. I thought you worked for Thomann
My absolute favourite female player on RUclips … no smut ,short skirts or innuendos … just a love of music . She is just a joy to watch and listen to 👍
Julia (or anyone at Thomann) what model Sandberg is this? The pickup isn't a standard Sandberg pickup as the pole pieces are different. I even clicked the link in the description, and it's supposed to be gear used in this video, but it's clearly a different bass. She's playing a two-pot model with 8 pole pieces, the one in the link has three pots and four pole pieces. Thanks in advance.
Julia, how about some great country bass lessons or some 1970's rock!
Hey Julia, how do you manage to do these videos without them being taken down? 🤔
It's called "fair use license" for transformative work.
That's a tricky tune. Thanks a lot Julia, i will listen a lot differently to the song now. Even if I'm an average drummer, I know how groovy Bernard can be. Good news ! So are you !
👏👏👏👍🎶🎶
In the chorus at 2:12 should we slide into the high F as well as back out of it ? The playing sounds great with both slides (Eb to F and then back to Eb) but the sheet music only shows the slide from the F crotchet down to the Eb crotchet. Same for the C to Bb crotchets, the video shows Bb slide to C slide back to Bb, but the music doesn't show both slides either
First! Hi Julia!
